NDOW did a great thing this year. They gave the hunt return statistics for antlered mule deer for every unit in Nevada over the last ten years. Working with these greater numbers gives a much cleaner estimate about the quality of bucks harvested over time, and where those bucks were taken.
What I have done is calculated the top five hunting units that had the highest percentage of 4+ or bigger bucks over the last ten years. Among those five units, there was a tie for first place. These two units had some of the biggest bucks taken over eight of the last ten years. I then ran a tiebreaker calculation based on the actual percentage figure. In other words, if both units had the biggest bucks for eight of ten years but one had 60 percent of its bucks as 4-point or better while the other unit had 65 percent, the latter would be crowned the victor.
And so, taking all these numbers into account, the Nevada hunt unit that had the highest average number of 4-point or bigger bucks over the last ten years was...
Unit 081.
That's right. This little one-horse unit up in the northeast corner of the state has no equal when it comes to getting a trophy muley buck. At least, according to the numbers, it is.
